Q: Does your facility use Twitter?
Q: How many followers does the facility have?
A: I don't know, our web guy looks after that.
That is a snapshot of a very common conversation I have with professionals and managers in the golf industry. The truth is, Twitter and social media is a great way to inform loyal customers, followers and members of what's going on at the club for the month, week, or day. But, what do you do on those special event days at the club? Do you make tweets and updates to your fan base? How cool would it be If you have a person sitting at their desk in their office and feeling as if they were right on the course inside the action. That's how powerful tweeting and social updating can be...
"I don't have time to constantly be on social media and I don't want to bug my followers every minute of the day."
Again, this is another common quote I get and do remember these people are following you because they like to hear from you. Every golf facility has a special event, league night, club championship, or set of events. What if on these days you could engage your followers with up to the minute scoring and happenings from the event. A simple tweet from the shop computer or from your phone with a link to a live leaderboard goes a long way in engaging participants and non participants of the event.
Even better is that during special events you can set up live scoring stations after 4 holes, 9 holes, 15 holes and of course 18 holes. These scores can then be posted to HD TV displays in the lounge, patio, or scoring area. Psssst... golf tournaments and groups love this.
Golf League Genius has a great live scoring feature through the mobile app and allows any registered league member or event participant to keep hole by hole scores for the group. These scores are then picked up every ten seconds and updated on the live leaderboards. If a Club Championship or weekly league were utilizing live scoring, only a couple of updates with interesting results accompanied with a link back to the leaderboard is all you need. Some great pictures do wonders as well for engaging online viewers.
Live scoring was once thought as impossible and the perception was that nobody would do the work or keep score with their phones. However, it's now becoming a trend that more people are seeking results and updates as quick as possible. Gone are the days of waiting for scores and players are now enthusiastic to take part in updating scores via mobile devices. Think how cool it would be to have the gallery following the final group of the Club Championship or around the final green and they all know exactly how the event stands. This technology is now at our fingertips and is extremely affordable to implement.
Golf Facilities should be proud of the programs or events they run. Tradition is vitally important in our game and industry. People playing in these events love to see their name published if they accomplish great things. This is a chance for leagues and facilities to showcase how great their membership is to the social world.
If you don't want to broadcast to the masses, then Golf League Genius has a great private social app included in the product. This is very similar to a Twitter or Facebook interface but is only available to registered league members or event participants. The content can be a little more humorous and creates great league camaraderie.
Do you have any similar practices at your club? Would members love to have live scoring at their Club Events?
