In earlier years, I ran a whole Member's Event Schedule at the club I grew up on, Southbrook Golf & Country Club, and organized a very successful Ryder Cup tournament that the entire membership looked forward to each year. I redeveloped the Men's League at Southbrook and on my travels to a new facility I brought some new ideas and built on a very successful Men's Night at Lowville Golf Club. Not to mention I worked for the Great Lakes Tour for nearly two seasons and became even more knowledgeable in how competitive events should be run.
So the big thing for me this winter was using all my previous experiences to develop the biggest one day Indoor Golf League in the GTA. I think the problem early on was, nobody knew me and what I had done as both player and passionate event organizer. With that said, I understand how important it is to develop camaraderie in leagues.
The league was one day away from not even happening. We held an open house and had potential league members come in, try the facility and pick my brain on the league details. I was overwhelmed with the amount of people that showed up and had 44 men sign up that night. I went to sleep that night with a smile on my face, knowing that I was going to be able to do something I enjoy.
The success of the League was based on a handful of guys taking on role of captain of a team and keeping their teammates interested with communication and ribbing. I also, had to keep a constant flow of Previews and Results emails that directed everyone to a Men's League website, where they could view their stats and standings plus read my latest blog. I feel I did a great job getting most of the players excited and feel last night was testament to that. I put in a lot of hours and hope that all the time will lead to great things next winter season.
When you do something right, people enjoy it. Some leagues are run half hearted and the organizers/facilities just do it for money or spiking beer sales. The main thing for me was to create an atmosphere over the winter where guys could come in on their schedule and play some competitive yet fun golf. I never had one complaint and will be looking to build and add more to this wonderful league next year. Check out our League website
