Tigerless... But Golf Roars On. 02/17/2010
With the Winter Olympics and Canadians glued to the set watching Alex Bilodeau win our first gold medal on home soil, golf was still played. Without Tiger, we can still enjoy some great golf and great venues... Pebble Beach was spectacular this year, and even though I've never played it, I believe TV doesn't give it the justice it deserves. What a great setting for a dramatic finish for the tournament. I was truly rooting for David Duval and I do believe he will win later this year. Dustin Johnson is the real deal with a powerful game and definitely worth watching. I love watching that tournament and it will be interesting and exciting to watch this year's U.S. Open. However, I missed the coverage of the Champions Tour and watched the second showing on Monday morning. I was so pleased to see Fred Couples win.... But what a great performance from Tommy Armour III. Unlike Pebble, where players were trying to lose the tournament, it was great to see an old fashion shoot out in Naples. I love watching the Champions Tour, as these were the men I grew up watching and idolizing. I still learn a lot from these guys, and man, they can still play. I am also intrigued how many junior golfers don't know who Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson are. I think there is a slight problem, as we should be educating our juniors more on history and HOW to play the game. As a junior, I remember sitting down and watching golf on Saturdays and Sundays with my father. I remember Jack Nicklaus winning his last Masters. I remember Robert Gamez holing out on the 72nd hole at Bayhill. I remember Larry Mize chipping in on the 11th at the Masters to win in a playoff. And the list goes on... It's these moments that made me fall in love with golf and wanted to do what these men were doing. If there's one thing I can suggest, please find the time to sit down with your junior golfer and watch some of the golf on TV or better yet take them to a PGA TOUR event. It is a great learning experience and remember Tiger Woods is not the only great player out there. CommentsLeave a Reply | Jim's BlogJim is a PGA of Canada Golf Professional.
