Chris Baryla and Matt McQuilan will play on the PGA Tour in 2011. Baryla, who was born in Calgary, played the PGA Tour in 2010 but an injury held him to a limited number of events played. McQuillan, from Kingston, is a former winner on the Canadian Tour and earned much success as a junior golfer in Ontario. Winning the 1999 Ontario Junior Championship and the 1999 Ontario Junior Match Play Championship.....
Baryla was a consistent player on the Great Lakes Tour only playing in 4 events but held a scoring average of 68.5 and earned $10,572. McQuillan joined the GLT in 2003 and used it as a stepping stone to gain status on the Canadian Tour where he won the 2005 Edmonton Telus Open.
It's great to see two more guys use the grass roots system of professional golf in Canada to propel them to greater levels. Other players include David Hearn, Rod Spittle, Bryan Decorso, Brennan Webb, Brian McCann and Lee Curry who have gone on to win or play on the Nationwide Tour and PGA Tour's. Of Course Rod Spittle won earlier this year on the Champions Tour in a playoff over past PGA Champion Jeff Sluman.
The Great Lakes Tour is proving to provide players with goals and aspirations a great platform to play and hone their skills. Over the ten years of existence, the GLT fields get deeper and deeper with talent and I'm sure we'll see more players graduating to higher levels which is exciting for Canadian golf fans.
